Confessions of a shopaholic, written by Sophie Kinsella, is a book most girls can compare themselves to. The story is set in London, and the main character Rebecca Bloomwood also called Becky is a shopaholic. She is using a lot more money than she can afford, every time she gets a bill or a letter from the bank she is putting it away and act like it never has come. Rebecca is a naive and caring girl, so you won’t get the impression that she is a superior bitch, which makes you feel sorry for her.
The thing with Rebecca is that she can’t even look at a shop without buying anything, for her shopping is a kind of therapy. Ironically she is working for a financial magazine where she is writing articles about how to save money. She actually doesn’t know anything about finance, but she has a special way of making people believing that. After receiving a lot of threatening letters from her bank, she is trying to cut back and spending less money, which is a hopeless project for her. She is also giving a financial advice to her parent’s neighbours, which doesn’t goes very well for them. But later she finds out that they had been swindled and then she writes an article about it, and this is a start for Rebecca’s career. Dough she is having problem spending to much money, she always finds a way to ignore it.
I think the theme of this book is addiction and having an unrealistic relationship to money; it’s like being addictive to smoke. Shopping makes Rebecca feel calm and happy; as I said before, for her it is therapy. She also has an unrealistic relationship to money; to her credit cards is something that will give her anything she wants without getting poor. She isn’t actually realising that pulling her credit card, will give her more debt. The themes in this book is something almost every girl can feel a connection to; I can easily see the similarities between Rebecca and me, just that her situation is much worse than is usually is for most of us.
I haven’t read any books like this before. This book is more about shopping than all the other books I have read, because usually the books I am reading are more about love. I also haven’t read any other books from Sophie Kinsella before, so I cant compare this book to her other books, but I’ve know she has written some other books in the shopaholic series where Rebecca Bloomwood is the main character.
I think the book was very easy to read, with its 317 pages it wasn`t a very long book either, which is perfect for me. I also like the theme of this book, because as I said before I can relate to her and I love shopping. This book is perfect for someone who wants to read an easy book and for girls that love shopping. I also think this book was a bit funny because the way she is getting out of different situations is pretty funny. I won’t say that this is the most exciting book I’ve ever read, and I wouldn’t recommend this book to boys, because they will probably fall to sleep after reading four pages. But for girls that want to read an easy book before they go to bed, this is a perfect book, because it doesn’t require that you have to think so much.
